The VWDRC are the leading VW drag racing club in the UK, and we have been for 20 years! The club's strength is it's members, a varied collection of the fastest and quickest VW's in Europe.

Bug, Bus (Bay, Split and the T25 be it camper or van they are all eligable to race with us!), Type 3 (Notchback, Squareback and Fastback) or a more modern VW, we welcome the Golf, Corrado and even Audi/Seat/Skoda, if it's VW/Audi group we want you to race!

Remember you don't need to have a race car to join and if you want to see how easy it is to get involved in drag racing then come find us in the pits at the biggest drag racing events in the country, or at our own VW drag racing events (Big Bang and BugJam) and have a chat!

National Finals 2008

This is it! Make sure you get yourself up to Santa Pod for the last race of the year, the 2008 National Finals.

After the rain affected European Finals a few weeks ago the Santa Pod event organisers decided to pull a few strings and arrange a bit of a spectacle for National Finals. A Nitro Shoot-Out including night-time fuel session will now take place over the 2 day meeting comprising 6 Fuel cars – 3 Top Fuel Dragsters and 3 Fuel Funny Cars! The six drivers in the Nitro Shoot-out will be John Spuffard, Risto Poutiainen, Thomas Nataas, Barry Sheavills, Linda Thun Tønseth and Gary Page!

Now add to this the final round of all the UK's premier sportsman championships, including the VWDRC and how can you miss it!!?

Whilst Spencer Tramm and rookie James Hodson are already champions in VW Sportsman and VW Pro respectively VW Alternate Engine is still open, can Andy Raw's ever improving 900bhp Funny Car catch Scott Evison's Subaru powered bug!?

It's not all decided in the other classes either, late season form has seen Chris Bray rise to second in VW Sportsman, but Adrian Wigley is only 10 points behind and Craig Allen and Martin Ayton are both more than in with a shout! Can Chris carry on his winning ways or will one of the contenders take the second place spot? There's sure to be some action in VW Pro too, Russ Fellows in his 9 second street car and Phil Norman in the beetle pickup will both be fighting tooth and nail for second place as James tries to stamp his authority on the championship and Rich Merriman returns in 'the unicorn' with yet more power from a new bigger turbo setup...

It's all going off this weekend at Santa Pod. Be there.

Open Sports Nationals 2008

What a weekend for the VWDRC at the Open Sports Nationals at Shakespeare County Raceway, glorious weather for the first two days and plenty of qualifying time meant some of the times run were amazingly close.

As we awoke on Monday morning there was a little damp in the air but no real delay, until one of the Nostalgia Fuel Altered runners rolled in the left lane, no harm to the driver but there was a wait while the track was cleared. Unfortunately that was followed by another incident and we were left waiting for even longer!

Once we did manage to get to the track it was action a plenty, with Sportsman champion-elect and experienced drag racer Spencer Tramm knocked out in round one by rookie Helen Williams and a number of heats won by less than 0.01 seconds!

Alternate Engine saw Matt Attwood break the Megasquirt EFI system on his Fastback, but all was not lost as he re-tasked his Saubaru engined Type 25 as a race car, much to the displeasure of his girlfriend Angie! This was the source of one of the most amazing races ever, Andy Raw in his 900bhp Beetle funny car against Matt Attwood in a high-top Type 25!! Matt must have been at the 1000ft mark before Andy even left the line such was the handicap, with Andy waiting almost 10 seconds! It was oh so close at the top and Matt thought he had it, but Andy ran 9.25 on his 9.25 dial-in to take the win! Amazing! This took Andy through to the final against Scott Evison in his Trial and Error car. Another great run by Andy saw him take the final.

Rich Merriman had made a great debut for his beautiful car in VW Pro but was sadly having problems this weekend, a slipping clutch and damage to the turbo kept him out, so the VW Pro final was to be between the experienced Phil Norman in his Beetle pickup and the rookie James Hodson in his phenomenal 10 second Golf. It was close at the top and you couldn't pick it by eye, but James took the win and with the VWDRC VW Pro Championship! He's also well in the running for the club's annual Rookie of the Year trophy.

VW Sportsman came down to two friends, Polly Naylor and Chris Bray, leaving the line first Polly was in front until the 1000ft mark when Chris passed her and showed his experience by getting off the gas so as not to break out. The run was one of the closest of the weekend, with Polly running 17.93 on her 17.9 dial-in, but Chris took the win with a 16.12 on his 16.1! This meant Chris took the APIRA VW Sportsman Championship from Polly by just 60 points! This also meant that Spencer Tramm cannot be caught in the VWDRC championship, congratulations Spencer.

VW Alternate Engine is still wide open at the top of the VWDRC championship, and the race for second in both VW Pro and VW Sportsman is hotting up, it's going to be one hell of a race at the National Finals at the end of September where Rookie of the Year will also be decided!

Shane Rae

It's a mixed event with loads of other classes and with so many championships at such important stages the racing is going to be very close. Whilst Spencer Tramm may have a commanding lead in VW Sportsman it's certainly not over yet and Adrian Wigley, Craig Allen and Shane 'Crazy Canuck' Rae are looking to make the most of Russ Weir's absence and cut into Spencer's lead. VW Alternate Engine is tight as can be at the top and anyone can still win it, Scott's looking to extend his lead while Matt and Andy look to peg him back a little! James Hodson looks to have VW Pro sewn up by this stage in the championship, but he's not resting on his laurels hoping to make absolutely sure of the win this weekend.

The weather looks great, so if you want to come see some of the best drag racing in Europe, support the VWDRC and head over to Shakespeare County Raceway this weekend and come say "Hi"!!

A Sad Loss This Weekend

After the tragic loss of his father in law whilst we were racing this weekend, we've had a special message from Martin Ayton.

I would like to thank everyone for their support over the weekend and especially to Bev, Craig and Ian for helping me pack up on Sunday due to the bereavement of my father in law.

I also want to thank all of the VWDRC Rob and Polly for nominating me for the RNJ Motorsport Car of the Event, it meant so much to me and my wife, thank you all.

In memory of John 24th August 2008.

Martin Ayton.

Our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time Martin, from all at the VWDRC.

More information about this weekends racing and results will follow in due course.

Ultimate Street Car featuring Euro Sports Compact

On Sunday 3rd August 2008 Ultimate Street Car will host the second event in the Euro Sports Compact series at Santa Pod.

bbCode image

The Euro Sports Compact is for contemporary European cars with European bodies and same manufacturer engines, from 4 to 6 cylinders, with open tyre choice.

The first Euro Sports Compact shootout took place at the Performance, Tuning & Modified Show on 11th May 2008 at Santa Pod Raceway, read a full race report on the PTM Show site.

With our very own James Hodson winning the first Euro Sports Compact event earlier this year he's in an ideal position to consolidate his position leading the Euro Sports Compact championship! Another VW Pro regular, Paul Jordan is also in attendance in his 4WD Scirocco trying to make sure James doesn't have it all his own way!

Andy Nichols looks set to return in the mental MG, but there's plenty of other VW's to support, in addition to the two VWDRC entries you'll also see a host of GTi Festival regulars; Grant Parker's mental 4x4 Audi powered Mk1 Golf, Andy Waite's 20v Turbo Mk1 Golf, and Mark Gunns' lovely 10 second 4x4 Corrado!

TV show 5th Gear are sure it's gonna be exciting and are covering the event! So if you enjoyed Bug Jam and like to party USC will be right up your street, if you wanna see some of the quickest European cars in the country then show a bit of support for the VW badge (and especially James and Paul from the VWDRC!) and get over there!!
