Big Bang 2008 Results

A huge thanks from all of us here at the VWDRC to Santa Pod and Brian Burrows for making Big Bang 2008 such a great weekend.

Things started well with great weather for the Run What Ya Brung and after a great day the MSA approving an evening qualifying session on Saturday evening. What a session it was! We ended Saturday's evening session with Donald Harvey, Chris Bray and Spencer Tramm sitting at number one in VW Pro, VW Sportsman and VW Alternate Engine respectively.

As Sunday morning dawned we saw something we hadn't seen for such a long time at Santa Pod, a dry track!

The action was underway immediately and after a couple of unfortunate oil downs early on we were soon into the swing of things! We had a number of excellent runs during the morning qualifying, Russ Fellows started turning up the wick in his silver Beetle managing a personal best down into the 9.80's, we also saw James Hodson run 10.65 in his Golf to take number one in VW Pro, Chris and Spencer kept the top spot in VW Sportsman and VW Alternate Engine. Unbelievably the top five in VW Sportsman were ALL less that 0.01 seconds from their dial-in!

Eliminations were as exciting as ever, unfortunately after a number of breakages during qualifying there was a larger than usual number of bye runs but we still saw some absolutely stunning runs! James Hodsons's new Personal best of 10.61 was of particular note, it's a little while since James lost his "Quickest Front Wheel Drive in Europe" crown, but with performances like this it's sure not gonna be long before he wins it back!!

A special mention has to go to Paul Herbert and team Fantom, running his gray roofchopped Beetle in Pro for the first time Paul managed to run down into the 12.80's with just a 1679cc engine! Awesome work I'm sure everyone will agree.

The finals were as close as ever and after a short wait we saw Paul and James take to the track, watching from the finish line it was close but Paul's Beetle that took the stripe and the win in his first meeting in VW Pro.

VW Sportsman was just as close as Easter Thunderball finalist Russ Weir faced up to Paul Day in his new yellow Beetle. Once again it was a close run and Russ had to settle for second in his second meeting too as Paul took the victory.

VW Alternate Engine wasn't quite so close as Mark Skeen had problems with his nitrous system and Spencer caught up with him mid-track and took the victory with relative ease although it wasn't all good for Spencer since he got knocked out by his protege Adrian Wigley in the first round of VW Sportsman!!

The only other trophy to be decided this weekend was the RNJ Motorsport "Car of the Meeting" award, as voted by the racers at the event. This was presented to Russ Fellows, who decided to celebrate the award by taking the car out for a practice run, only to break it in the burn out!! We hope it's nothing serious and that you manage to fix it relatively easily Russ!

All in all a fantastic weekends racing was had by all, here's hoping it's the first of many this year!

The VWDRC at The Volksworld Show - Sandown Park

It was great to see the VWDRC with such a large presence at the Volksworld Show this year. In my opinion we should be doing more of this - attending/displaying at ‘static’ events. Even though our cars are built for racing, displaying at other VW events definitely raises the profile of the club.

It was nice to see ‘Rookie’ Danny Wharton’s car on the Volksworld stand/display and Wayne Allman’s latest (mentalist) creation rubbing shoulders with all the Splits and Bays in the Esher Hall. Danny Allen and Martin ‘Stretch’ Charles added their fine vehicles to the Big Bang/Santa Pod stand.

The VWDRC display itself featured the new A/E Funny Car of Andy Raw, Rhod Price’s reworked 912, Peter Christie’s beautiful flamed Ghia which he had brought all the way down from Scotland, Conor ‘Raceshack’ LaGrue’s gorgeous new Crewcab Splittie, Daz Coleman’s ever-so-clean Scooby Bug and Joe Gallagher’s amazing new Split Crewie. Well done to all, you guys did the club very proud.

Special pats on the back and congratulations go out to Wayne and Andy on their awards. Wayne collected a Top 20 award, while Andy received the much-coveted ‘Peoples’ Choice’ (as voted by the paying public) award.

The Volksworld Show at Sandown proved to be a great start to our historic 20th season . . . roll on the race shows.

More Sponsorship!

The VWDRC Committee is both pleased and proud to announce its largest sponsorship deal for racers since the mid-nineties. With over 20 companies getting involved, 2007 will see the largest prize fund for the winning driver in each of the three classes ever. All three classes, VW Pro, VW Sportsman and VW Alternate Engine will run decals featuring all of the companies’ logos and the prize fund payout at the end of the season for each of the three classes will be as follows:

Champion £650, Runner-up £400 and Third Place £200.

It is fitting that in this, the VWDRC’s 20th consecutive year of Championship Drag Racing that the Champions will receive their largest ever reward alongside the trophy and prestige of being Champion of their class.

The companies involved are: Aircooled Performance, Bears Motorsport Transmissions, Eastfalia, Graffix Detail, GSF Car Parts, HIC Insurance, Intergalactic Custom Shop, Kingfisher Kustoms, L.A. Performance, Machine 7, NAS Events, Nefarious Pinstriping, Odd-Ball Import Ltd, Raceshack, Skibbly TV, Slook.co.uk, Stateside Tuning, Street Style & Power, TSR Engine Conversions, Type Three Detectives, Volksworld Magazine, Volkszone.com, VW Heritage.

If you are a fan of VW Drag Racing, when ordering goods, parts or services, please remember those companies who have ‘given something back’.

AGM 2006 (3rd December 2006)

Santa Pod Raceway supremo, David Llloyd-Jones was guest of honour at this year's AGM and kindly presented the 2006 Season's Winners and Runners-Up with their trophies (see pics).

The Agenda, for the first time I can actually remember, contained no contentious issues whatsoever. A case of "If it's not broken..." I guess?

The item that raised the most discussion was whether it should be a requirement for VWDRC A/E Drivers to have at least one tattoo and one piercing. This was agreed and voted in by the membership and will be forwarded to the MSA for for their opinion/blessing for inclusion in the 'White Book'.

David explained the current situation for 2007 with regard to petrol generators in the pits (they're illegal) and explained that Santa Pod were/are trying to work out a sensibly priced plan for electric 'hook up' for all racers.

The only other serious issue that was voted upon was to make VWDRC-founder, Brett Hawksbee a 'Lifetime Honorary Member' to celebrate his twenty years of promoting 'new-wave' VW events and his work in helping form the VWDRC.

A good time was had by all.
